Dealing with the Trauma of Terrorists

by Roy Masters

By failing to deal properly with daily stress we slowly but surely lose faith in who we are. This is true for individuals and nations. Stress can make us better or bitter depending on how we rise to meet cruelty’s constant challenge.

There are only two possible outcomes, both unfortunate, whenever one overreacts to stress: we tend to become like what we hate or we become subservient to what you hate.

A person’s overreaction is caused by an entrenched anger known as resentment. This brings one under the will of the tormentor. Without our nation’s resentful cooperation not even terrorist attacks can get inside us.

What is referred to as post-traumatic distress syndrome, is caused by hostility toward those nations, people and events which make us feel helpless and out of control.

During an attack of any kind, personal or military, the worst thing possible is to become upset. It is the wrong response to trauma, forcing us to lose control over our thoughts and feelings. The next worst thing you can do is to become angry with yourself for having lost control. This exacerbates your condition, creating reoccurring thoughts, which cause sleeplessness, irritability and greater sensitivity to circumstances

Curing post-traumatic stress disorder, the kind America now suffers, is extremely simple. Remember, resentment works against you not for you. Resentment is similar to a hypnotic emotion which grips the mind. Anyone or anything that intimidates you can slowly but surely rob you of self-control. This gives the adversary the power to emotionally implant compulsive thoughts and behaviors in your head, a condition that worsens when you struggle to resist.

The heart of the cure is courage. Courage, the kind you can only obtain from a higher source, is replaced by fear and anxiety whenever you are resentful or upset. Resentment sensitizes you to stress so that it gradually takes less stress to intimidate you more.

Here’s how to start overcoming your post-traumatic distress condition. You, as an individual and we as a nation must observe our reactions toward the bothersomeness of war as well as thoughts and feelings in our past. Any lingering resentment towards our enemies, any person or event, real or imagined, has the same effect as experiencing the original trauma over and over again. We are torn asunder over events and circumstances that no longer exist, except as unfinished business in our minds.

Our struggle with the implication of our wrong reaction, no matter its source, gives rise not only to greater anxiety but sets you up to fail again under less pressure..

So, begin now by dropping your hostility toward memories and compulsive thoughts. Look no more at the film footage of jets flying into the WTC. This will help strengthen and prepares you for the next irritating event in your life no matter how large or small. Stand back, outside the moment as though you were watching a boring movie. Watch from inside as resentment begins to rise, only to let it pass.

If you can achieve this with every troublesome moment in life, you will find all your fears and anxieties disappearing, paving the way for a secure, golden age right here in America.
