Self-Help Eating Disorders
Millions of men and women suffer from eating disorders. The most common types of eating disorders include food deprivation (anorexia), binge eating and purging (bulimia), excessive exercise, and extreme fluctuations in weight.
Food is a tricky issue because we all need to eat to live. For some people, food is like a drug. Many people who have control issues play them out in their relationship with food. For some people, the only area in their lives where they feel like they have any control is in their eating habits.
Eating disorders are also tricky because society so often rewards people for being thin. Many people are encouraged to lose weight, but they take it to extremes. They thrive on the compliments they receive, until one day they realize they actually have a serious, and possibly even life-threatening, problem.
Just because you suffer from an eating disorder doesn't mean you can't do something about it. The Center for Study of Health, Religion, and Spirituality has conducted studies on the connection between binge eating and meditation. Early results indicate there is a connection between decreased rates of binge eating and a daily practice of meditation. At the Foundation of Human Understanding, we strive to help individuals with eating disorders to come to a greater level of self-acceptance and self-love. Our meditation techniques address the specific needs of people with eating disorders.
