Transcendental Meditation
When many people think of meditation, they think of transcendental meditation. This style of meditation has its detractors and its proponents. The basic idea behind any type of meditation or relaxation exercise is to reduce stress, calm the nerves, and often to create a heightened sense of awareness.
Transcendental meditation was developed in 1955 by Maharishi Mehesh. The practice was quite popular in the 1970s, and has continued to have a strong following through the years. According to official TM literature, the movement has a following of some six million people around the world.
At the Foundation of Human Understanding, we teach a meditation that is different in a subtle but important way. While transcendental meditation has been shown to produce many positive medical benefits, transcendental meditation achieves results by focusing your mind on a sound or mantra--in effect, drowning out thoughts, emotions, and reality with a sea of noise. This does work to relieve the sufferer from his symptoms, but by dealing with symptoms rather than the root causes, such meditations remove you further from problems and reality. In effect, this provides peace apart from God, self and the world rather than peace with God, the world and ultimately yourself. As transcendental- and mantra-based meditations for the most part amount to distraction and escapism, they can often become addictive like any drug or form of escape that leaves you dull or empty. Benefits are usually short term or temporary and leave practitioners feeling disappointed--and in some cases, even more cynical than when they set out on their spiritual journeys.
We believe in any long-term and permanent solution that involves a spiritual healing process. We teach a style of meditation called "Be Still and Know." In this style of meditation, the ultimate goal is to overcome and not just escape from the negative emotions and self-defeating behaviors that have kept many of us trapped in a state of inertia. Our meditative practice has helped people to not just curb eating disorders, quit smoking, reduce stress and anxiety but permanently conquer them and improve productivity in all areas of their lives.
