Zen Meditation Techniques
There are a variety of different meditation techniques used by people all over the world. Meditation is one of the best tools you have at your disposal for reducing the harmful effects of daily stress and trauma. At the Foundation of Human Understanding, we teach a spiritual type of meditation called "Be Still and Know."
Many people compare Christian meditation techniques to Eastern meditation. One of the most common types of Eastern meditation is Zen meditation. This style originated centuries ago as part of Zen Buddhism, and involves sitting positions and breathing, or chakras.
There are five key principles observed during Zen meditation. Some of the basic techniques include sitting like a colossal bell, sitting up straight like a soaring pine, relaxing physically and mentally, emptying your mind, and focusing on your breathing or target chakra. Many experts say you cannot benefit from Zen meditation if you're tired or you're in a bad mood.
You can't always count on being in a good mood, and when you practice the "
Be Still and Know" meditation, you don't have to be in any particular mood. This style of meditation is less rigid, and focuses more on changing your reaction to stress by renewing the mind from within. Rather than feeling victimized by anger, stress, and resentment, you gain a new perspective on negative emotions the longer you practice this style of meditation.
